"The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.” Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird
BRYAN/COLLEGE STATION, April 14, 2014 – Join us for the 6th Annual Atticus Finch Day, May 2, in the Atrium of the Brazos County Administrative Building, 200 South Texas Avenue, Bryan.
The Guest Speaker will be Houston Attorney John Raley. Raley worked pro-bono for 9 years to free Michael Morton who, falsely prosecuted for murdering his wife, had spent 25 years behind bars for a crime he had not committed based on a District Attorney’s withholding evidence. John Raley’s metered persistence exemplifies the moral courage depicted by Atticus Finch, the attorney in Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel To Kill A Mockingbird.
The case led to Governor of Texas Rick Perry signing into law the Michael Morton Act designed to remove barriers for accessing evidence and more open discovery. The story has been featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes and The Katie Couric Show. A novel based on the case entitled Depraved Prosecution and a documentary film, An Unreal Dream have brought the case national recognition.
Atticus Finch Day is hosted by The Brazos County Bar Association and The Law Office of Shane Phelps, P.C.
Refreshments will be provided and Seersucker attire encouraged. For more information, call 979.775.4100.
